Discover the timeless art of basket weaving in this true beginner's class. You’ll learn foundation techniques while creating a series of beautiful particle baskets, six to be exact. Projects include a cocktail napkin basket, dinner napkin basket, heart basket, gift basket, wine tote basket, and garden tote basket. By the end of the class, you’ll have a handmade collection of your own baskets and the confidence to continue weaving on your own. The course will cover the history, creation, and merchandising of baskets. Materials are provided.
Meet the artist:
Interested in art since childhood, Nagy rekindled her passion after moving to North Carolina in 1983, where she discovered the region’s strong fine craft traditions. Studying with master Basketmakers, she mastered traditional techniques and began developing her own creative style.
Her work evolved beyond function into sculptural and mixed-media forms, leading to an affiliate residency at The McColl Center for Visual Art and the co-founding of the Charlotte ARTery collective, supported by a Knight Foundation grant.
After several years in New Mexico’s vibrant Placitas art community, Nagy has returned to North Carolina, continuing to explore and redefine basketry. Her work blends traditional craftsmanship with unexpected materials, celebrating basketry as both fine craft and contemporary art.
