MCC Board of Trustees celebrated Mitchell community members and alumni at Founders' Day

Mayland Community College Board of Trustees celebrated community members and alumni who go above and beyond in their work. Trustee members, as well as MCC President Dr. John Boyd, honored individuals during the College’s annual Founders’ Day event.

The 2018 Distinguished Alumni from Mitchell County was presented to Travis Wynkoop. Wynkoop earned his certificate in Human Services from MCC in 2018, and currently works for MCC as an instructor at Mountain View Correctional Institution as well as a Pastor at Griffith Chapel Church.  Wynkoop is active in the community through serving as a soccer coach for the Mitchell County Parks and Recreation Department and is an inspiration to others through his positive attitude and willingness to serve his community.  

The 2018 Distinguished Citizen for Mitchell County award was given to John and Scottie Wellborn.

Scottie Wellborn has been an active citizen of Mitchell County for many years. She worked as a teacher for 31 years where she received Teacher of the Year in 1984 and 1996.  She also worked as a buyer for McCalls Department Store. Mrs. Wellborn served her community as President of the Spruce Pine Junior Woman’s Club, Chairman of the Spruce Pine Library Board, member of the Spruce Pine Zoning Board, member of the Spruce Pine Foundation Board, member of the Safe Place Board, and a Girl Scout Leader.  She is also an active member of Central Baptist Church as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. For fun, Mrs. Wellborn enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, crafting, hiking, and traveling. 

John Wellborn is also an active citizen of Mitchell County. He was owner of Wellborn’s, a family owned business, for 50 years. Mr. Wellborn served as member and President of many different organizations including: Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce, Merchant’s Association, Mitchell County Economic Development Commission, Blue Ridge Hospital Board, Jaycees Service Organization, Kiwanis’s Club, the Mayland Technical College Building Program, and Mitchell County YMCA. He has also received many awards including the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year 1993, Outstanding Citizen Award of Mitchell County 1976, and Retailor of the Year 1993. Mr. Wellborn is also an active member of Central Baptist Church where he serves as deacon, Trustee, member of the Finance and Building and Grounds Committees. In his free time, Mr. Wellborn enjoys working in his yard, camping, hiking, and traveling.  John and Scottie Wellborn have a daughter, Rebecca, son-in-law, Jay Grant and two grandchildren, Bo and Julia. 

The President’s Award was presented to Becky Anderson and Paul O’Connell who have proved that leading by example makes a strong community.

Other alumni recognized was Ethan Sluder and Julia Silvers. Other distinguished citizens recognized included Richard Larson and Jamie McMahan.
