Work Skills Academy

Work Skills Academy is a free training program for adults who want to build their skills for entering the workforce. This entry-level program is designed for Occupational Course of Study (OCS) graduates and others who have barriers to traditional work. Adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Through the program, students build skills, make connections with local employers, and master specific job tasks. Plus, over the course of the program, students develop an Interview Portfolio documenting their achievements and the specific skills they have mastered. Graduates of Workforce Academy will be better prepared for employment.

Classes are held on the Mayland Community College campus in Spruce Pine.

The college also offers Life Skills classes for students who may need to build skills before being ready for Work Skills Academy.

Work Skills Academy and Life Skills students are also involved in an ongoing service learning project called Life Works, where they are able to put into practice some of the academic and employability skills they are learning.
