Phlebotomists are medical professionals who work in a variety of settings collecting blood. Generally, the purpose of drawing the blood is for sample work, but Certified Phlebotomy Technicians (CPT) may be responsible for conducting patient interviews, checking vital signs, and transporting the blood samples to a laboratory for testing purposes.


Training Includes:

  • Verifying test requisitions and patient identification
  • Obtaining blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks
  • Maintaining specimen integrity
  • Tracking collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection.
  • Maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
  • Maintaining quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule
  • Recording results in the quality-control log
  • Identifying and reporting needed changes
  • Maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures
  • Complying with legal regulations
  • Serving and protecting the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements
  • Development of communication skills for working with patients
  • Maintaining equipment


Admission Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Provide proof of high school completion (high school transcripts, copy of high school diploma, or copy of competition of GED requirements)
  • Provide documentation of complete immunization record including proof of MMR 1 and 2 or individual titers, current TB test (must be active upon completion of course), varicella infection by medical record, varicella titer, or varicella immunization if titer is negative, proof of hepatitis B vaccine (completed dose 1,2, and 3) or signed MCC waiver prior to clinical start date
  • Tetanus and flu shots for some clinical sites

  • Text $100 (subject to change)
  • Cost of CPR card
  • Optional accident insurance $1.20


Other Fees:

  • Drug screening for clinical site
  • Background check for clinical site
  • Certification exam $90
