Course Delivery

Mayland Community College (MCC) delivers the AEMT-to-Paramedic Hybrid course in 55-weeks. The program is divided up into (3) sections.

1. EMS-4303A (Part A) = Online courses (500 hours of Didactic completed through Moodle).
2. EMS-4303B (Part B) = 132 hours of Lab sessions, which include hands-on skills training and 84 hours of Hospital Clinical (Labs completed at MCC main campus).
3. EMS-4303C (Part C) = 158 hours of Lab sessions, which include hands-on-skills training and a total of 246 hours of EMS Field Mentoring Clinical Education. After 166 hours of EMS Field Mentoring is complete, the last 100 hours are capstone field internship hours.  (Labs completed at MCC main campus). ***The Last 100 hours of the EMS Field Internship are considered Capstone.  The student will act as the Team Lead during this portion of the field internship experience***

Students must successfully complete Part A, B, and C to be eligible for the credentialing exam with NCOEMS.

Entrance Requirements

• Pre-requisite of a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate
• Certification as a North Carolina AEMT (Students that have successfully completed the AEMT course within the last 30 days are waived of this requirement; however, must possess AEMT certification prior to starting Part B of the course)
• Current credential in American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare
• Current reading and math assessment test (CASAS) and score reading comprehension and math skills at the post-secondary level. (254+ CASAS Reading Score and 249+ Math CASAS Score). There will be no exceptions to this rule.  Students producing an official college transcript illustrating successful completion of a college-level English and/or Math course are exempt from the reading and/or math assessment.  Transcripts can be sent to Jennifer Grindstaff at jgrindstaff@mayland.edu.
• Verification of successful completion of an eligible Anatomy & Physiology course prior to Technical Scope of Practice (TSOP) evaluations. All Clinical time to include ER and EMS must be completed prior to TSOP evaluations All FISDAP documentation must also be completed prior to students sitting for their Medical Director TSOP. (Approved Anatomy and Physiology Courses per NCOEMS are)
  • EMS- 3163 Basic Anatomy and Physiology when the course meets all other requirements of these guidelines, to include meeting SACSCOC standards for instructors of curriculum-level
  • BIO-163
  • BIO-165 & 166
  • BIO-168 & 169 (Preferred)
• Pre-Registration is required (Students must attend General Orientation).
• Do not perform your background check more than 90 days prior to the start date of your Hospital Clinical time (//2024). HCA will make you redo and pay for another!
