The Medical Coding curriculum will prepare students to sit for the AAPC exam. Students will leave this class with an understanding of the history and impact of health insurance on the healthcare reimbursement process. They will be able to identify key elements of a managed care contract and identify the role HIPAA plays. Students will be able to recognize and explain the differences in hospital and physician billing, understand worker’s compensation and work with the reimbursement process.
The employment outlook, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicates an above average growth in positions with an aging population driving the demand for coders. Students who successfully complete this course may find employment in a variety of settings to include; hospitals, doctor’s offices, or laboratories. Average pay is up to $19.40 per hour.
