Adults and children alike enjoy a good ghost tale. The Appalachian Mountain region is rich with haunted legends and superstitions. These are some of the oldest mountains on Earth – and if they could talk, one can only imagine what stories they could tell! Ghost stories have become legends passed down from the family hearth to the corner store and beyond. The Bell Witch. The Brown Mountain Lights. The Greenbrier Ghost. These legends revolve around a human character who has encountered the supernatural, which enables the storyteller to teach a lesson about society’s moral or social codes. They reach out to listeners today, to entertain and to educate. This course, through materials and discussion, will delve into the tales and legends of the Appalachian area.
