Adults and children alike enjoy a good ghost tale. North Carolina is rich with haunted legends and superstitions. From the disappearance of the first permanent English settlement after 1590, to Lydia, the vanishing hitchhiker in the Piedmont, to the mountains where souls of Native Americans are said to light up the night, North Carolina is teeming with tales of the ghostly. Ghost stories have become legends passed down from the family hearth to the corner store and beyond. These legends generally revolve around a human character who has come in contact with the supernatural, which enables the storyteller to teach a lesson about society's moral or social codes. They reach out to listeners today, to entertain and to educate. This course, through materials and discussion, will delve into the tales and legends of The Old North State while exploring history through the lens of the paranormal.
