Regulations and Eligibility Requirements

Student eligibility for financial assistance is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Mayland Community College Scholarship Application. All information received in the MCC Financial Aid Office will remain confidential. Awards are made according to federal, state, and local regulations.

A student’s need is determined by subtracting the expected family contribution (EFC) from the total educational cost (COA). Information submitted may be subject to documented verification.

The school reserves the right to review and make adjustments to awards if the student becomes over awarded, if the student’s resources change, or if there are other changes in the student’s financial need.

If a student’s financial aid award has not been processed, payment will be expected by no later than the designated payment date for each registration period. Failure to do so will result in the student being removed from his or her classes. Students receiving financial assistance are required to earn a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester when receiving financial aid as a full-time student, nine (9) credit hours per semester when receiving financial aid as a three-quarters time student, six (6) credit hours per semester when receiving financial aid as a half-time student, and one (1) credit hour per semester when receiving financial aid as a less than half-time student. Federal regulations mandate that students receiving financial aid must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress both qualitatively (GPA) and quantitatively (completion rate). Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA and a minimum cumulative 67% completion rate in order to retain financial aid eligibility.

Students receiving Title IV federal aid, who drop out before the 60% point of the semester, or State aid, who drop out before the 35% point of the semester, are required to pay back a percentage of the aid. Failure to repay will result in the inability to register at Mayland Community College and to receive copies of transcripts until the debt is resolved. Students who have failed to complete exit counseling will also be unable to obtain MCC transcripts until it is complete. Students who are in default of a student loan or have received a Pell Grant overpayment are ineligible for Title IV aid, per Federal Regulations, until the debt is resolved.

Students that have already earned a Bachelor’s degree or a Graduate degree are not eligible for Pell grants or State grants but may be eligible for the Federal Work Study Program.

Financial aid awards are not made on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, disability, age, religion, veteran status, or any other characteristic or status protected by applicable local, state, or federal law.
