The mission of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness is to develop, implement, and evaluate programs in order to provide support and data to Mayland Community College’s decision-making and policy development processes. In other words, the OIE serves as the accountability branch of the college to gather data regarding what impact the college has upon the individual student and/or the community it serves. In gathering these data, the OIE uses, develops, and operates multiple processes:
1. Strategic Planning Process
This process, delegated to Institutional Effectiveness, is for ensuring the alignment of goals and objectives with the mission and vision of the college. College-wide input in the operationalizing of the planning process is a must. Without college-wide input, the strategic planning process is not complete. Providing leadership and direction for the college-wide planning and assessment process include:
- monitoring and maintaining the college’s planning schedule
- providing assistance to college divisions for planning and assessment
- conducting program reviews on all curriculum programs
- conducting planning activities such as the annual planning meeting and focus groups
- updating and maintaining the planning software annually (MCC currently uses Access, but there are plans to change planning software)
- serving as the IPEDS keyholder and college data coordinator
- assisting faculty and staff in collecting and organizing data for assessment
2. Develop and Maintain Evaluations Systems
These processes include utilizing measuring systems to meet education goals, identify critical success factors, establish indicators/standards by which to evaluate the effectiveness identified in critical areas, and develops documentation using a variety of data sources:
- Online survey distribution, scoring, and reporting
- Hard copy survey distribution, scoring, and reporting
- Survey distribution that provides data on human resources, student financial aid, enrollment, finance, and additional items for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)
- Survey distribution, scoring, and reporting on specific measures for the North Carolina Community College System Office’s Data Warehouse
3. Develop, Utilize, and Maintain Collections Processes
All collections processes are scrutinized annually to improve effectiveness.
- Assistance with annual individual program and department goals, learning objectives, and assessments that are aligned with MCC’s Strategic Plan
- Assistance with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) reports
- Compile the Academic Master Plan to align with the Strategic Plan
- Provision of data for the NCCCS Performance Measures (See links below)
4. Communicate Results
A systematic process for communication to internal and external constituents as well as funding agencies. Compiling and publishing various documents and reports including:
- Institutional Effectiveness webpage
- Program Review Reports, progress reports on college goals, and college-wide accomplishments
- results of annual accountability performance measures and standards
- designing and scanning selected college surveys to meet accountability requirements
