In 1992, internationally renowned author Dr. Gloria Houston founded the Mayland Community College Young Authors Celebration. This event has continued each year since and has grown tremendously. This year will have a Family Heritage theme. Children who participate are encouraged to interview friends and family members using a list of questions provided. In doing so, our aspiring young authors will discover their families’ history and the value of their Appalachian heritage. The event is tentatively scheduled for May 4, 2008. All school-aged children from Avery Mitchell and Yancey counties are encouraged to participate.
