SOAR Program Steps to Admission

Want to enroll in the SOAR Program? Just follow these steps to gain admission to the program.

To receive assistance, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment here at Mayland Community College and have an established need for academic assistance. You can get more information on admissions here.

To qualify, you must meet one or more of the following criteria

  • First Generation college student
    (neither parent graduated from a four-year college);

  • Low income by federal guidelines;

  • Physically or learning disabled.

If you meet these criteria, follow these steps to SOAR Program enrollment:

  1. Complete an Admissions Application
    Stop by the SOAR Office on the second floor of Gwaltney Hall [map] to request a application or you download the application here.

    The downloadable application is in the Adobe Acrobat PDF format (requires the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded here).

    You can fill out page one of the form inside the Adobe Acrobat Reader (you must complete it and print it, as you cannot save the information you enter inside the form) and then print it out, fill out page 2 in your own handwriting, and turn it in to the SOAR Office.

    You can download the application here.

  2. >Schedule Intake Interview
    After the completed SOAR Application is returned to SOAR Office, the S.O.A.R. Assistant will help you schedule a intake appointment with a counselor (approximately a one hour meeting).

  3. Application Presented for Approval
    The counselor will present your file at a staff meeting for acceptance.

  4. Acceptance and Orientation
    After staff meeting, if student is accepted to the Program, the SOAR Administrative Assistant will schedule an orientation meeting for you with a Peer Advisor (approximately 30 minutes long). After the orientation meeting, you are officially accepted into the SOAR Program.

  5. Schedule A Needs Assessment
    Your Peer Advisor will help you schedule a Needs Assessment meeting with a SOAR counselor.
