Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is concurrent enrollment?
The Concurrent Enrollment Program allows high school students to earn college credit for select courses while in high school. The program was developed to allow students to begin working on their college degree while still in high school, thus allowing them to finish their college degree earlier than if they begin classes after high school graduation.

Am I eligible for concurrent enrollment?
If you are at least 16 years old, meet college placement test standards and your high school eligibility standards, and have written permission from your parents, principal and superintendent, you may participate in concurrent enrollment classes.

When are concurrent enrollment classes offered?
You can take concurrent enrollment classes during school hours, after school and during the summer.

What kinds of classes can I take?
You may take any course that Mayland Community College offers numbered 100 or higher as long as you meet the prerequisites for the course. The following courses can be taken if you meet the eligibility criteria.

College Transfer Classes include:

  • Art
  • English
  • Foreign Language
  • History
  • Humanities
  • Math
  • Physical Education
  • Psychology
  • Science
  • Sociology

Other Mayland Courses available include:

  • Accounting
  • Autobody Repair
  • Business Administration
  • Carpentry
  • Computer Engineering Technology
  • Cosmetology
  • Criminal Justice Technology
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Electronics
  • Horticulture
  • Computer Information Technology
  • Office Systems Technology

How are grades recorded?
Concurrent enrollment grades are recorded on both college and high school transcripts.

Are certain courses off-limits?
High school students may not enroll in courses numbered below 100. For example, a high school student would not be allowed to take OST 080 Keyboarding because the course ID number is below 100.

What does concurrent enrollment cost?
Students in concurrent enrollment classes do not pay tuition, lab fees, student activity fees or insurance fees. Students must buy a textbook if required and supplies for the course.

What are the steps for enrolling in concurrent enrollment?
You should follow these steps when enrolling in a concurrent enrollment class:

  1. When you register for your high school classes, make sure you select concurrent enrollment.
  2. Your counselor will give you information as to when a Concurrent Enrollment Orientation will be given.
  3. At this orientation you will receive:
    • Information on the program and guidelines on becoming a college student.
    • A Concurrent Enrollment Application if you have not previously submitted one.
    • A concurrent enrollment permission form.
    • A time for taking the placement test. You are exempt from taking the placement test for certain courses, or if you have acceptable SAT or ACT scores. Courses that require reading and English as a prerequisite require a score of 500 on the Verbal section of the SAT and 20 on the Reading section of the ACT. Courses that require math as a prerequisite require a score of 500 on the Math section of the SAT and 20 on the Math section of the ACT.
    • A course schedule of courses that are offered.
    • Individual advising from the off-campus admissions coordinator to assist you in selecting your courses.
