MCC’s Student Development Office is designed to assist you with various aspects of your education from pre-admission through graduation.
Located in Gwaltney Hall on the Main Campus [map], Student Development provides services to:
- recruit new students
- conduct admissions activities and placement testing
- provide financial aid and scholarship assistance
- provide counseling for educational, career and personal problems
- assist in MCC registration and transfer to other colleges and universities
- assist with job placement opportunities for students and graduates
- assist veterans with federal educational benefits
- organize tutorial programs
- coordinate student activities at MCC
Student Development is staffed Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Linking Everyone Online (LEO)
Linking Everyone Online (LEO) is MCC’s version of an online student center. Inside LEO you will find fast access to your schedule, grades, personal and instructor e-mail and more. See the sections bellows for instructions and quick how-to guides.
HOW DO I LOG IN TO LEO?
The web address for LEO is: leo.mayland.edu. Do not use the prefix: ‘www.’ The web address, leo.mayland.edu, will take you directly to leo’s public homepage where you will see a button that says Log in.
WHAT IS MY USER NAME AND PASSWORD?
Your user name is your first and middle initial and you last name as you entered
it on your MCC application. Your first password will be your birth date in a six
digit format (example March 3, 2003 would be 030303). You will be asked to
change your password immediatley to something that is of your choice.
HOW CAN I FIND MY STUDENT I.D. NUMBER?
Log into your LEO account and access the Student (Web Advisor) tab. Once you
are on this page, look at the left-hand side of the page in a blue box for the title My Profile. Under this section you will find your name, information, and Student
ID number.
TO EXPRESS REGISTER FOR CLASSES
(YOU MUST MEET WITH YOUR ADVISOR FIRST!)
- Find the 4-digit SYN number (located next to the course number in the schedule) in the MCC Class Schedule and copy this number for use when you register
- Select the Academics tab then choose Students (WebAdvisor). If you have
written down the 4–digit SYN code then select Express Register on the left hand side and follow the screens.
TO FIND A COPY OF YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE ON LEO:
- Log into LEO with your username and password.
- Click the Academics button at the top of the page, then click the Student
WebAdvisor button under the Academics button.
- Scroll down the left-side of the page and look in the blue boxes to find Academic Profile. Here you can locate “My Class Schedule,” click this selection.
- Choose the term you want to see for example: 2006sp for Spring 2006, then click the submit button. This will bring up your schedule that you can print a copy for your personal use. This copy of your schedule will show classes, rooms, dates, and times. You can also use this copy of your schedule at the Mayland Bookstore to find the books you will need during the semester.
ALSO INSIDE LEO YOU WILL FIND ACCESS TO YOUR GRADES
Here is a how you check your grades:
- Log on to leo.mayland.edu
- Click on the Academics tab (at the top of the screen)
- Click on students’ Web-Advisor
- Click on transcript (under academic profile on the left-hand side of the screen)
- Transcript type will be CU, click submit and scroll down for your grades
- To find grades for the current semester, click on the grades tab and choosethe semester you want to see and click the submit button
If you need a hard copy of your grades for tuition reimbursement, transfer reasons, or other please submit a request to the registrar’s office located on the ground floor of Gwaltney Hall.
IN ADDITION TO GRADES YOU CAN ALSO FIND YOUR STUDENT TRANSCRIPT. FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
- Log into LEO with you username and password.
- Click the Academics button at the top of the page, then click Student WebAdvisor button under the Academics button.
- Scroll down the left-side of the page and look in the blue boxes find Academic Profile here you can located “Transcripts” click this selection, and choose Curriculum schedule and click the submit button, this will pull up you transcript complete with grades and your GPA.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not an official copy of your transcript. You must request that from the MCC Registrar.

Student Activities
Inside this section:
MCC offers several scheduled activities and ten student organizations in which students are encouraged to participate. Linking Everyone Online (LEO) offers a calendar of events and announcements to help everyone stay up-to-date on what is happening at MCC's three campuses.
Yearly Activities
Student Appreciation Day/Spring Fling is your chance to meet other students and MCC employees while enjoying fun activities and refreshments.
Transfer Days give you an opportunity to talk with representatives from colleges and universities about transfer options.
Career Days provide you with opportunities to talk with employers to learn about a variety of career fields.

Criminal Justice Association
The CJ Association is an organization of current and previous students, along with current employees in the system who promote and educate on issues in the field of Criminal Justice. Another goal of the organization is to provide an avenue of networking for practitioners in the field. See a BLET or Criminal Justice Instructor for more information on this organization.
Sports
MCC offers men's and women's intercollegiate sports. The college is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Associate (NJCAA) and the Western TarHeel Conference. The team's mascot is the Mayland Mountain Lion. For more information, please contact the Vice-President of Student Development.
Student Government Association (SGA)

MCC’s Student Government Association (SGA) represents you in the policy decisions of the college and encourages you to participate in the College decision-making process. SGA also provides you with opportunities to develop leadership abilities by service in senator or officer positions. Each year, the SGA sponsors student activities such as dances, ice cream socials and special events. Elections for student body president and SGA Executive Council are held each April. Stop by the SGA office near the Student Commons [map] for more information on SGA activities.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

The Alpha Pi Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) makes Mayland its home. PTK is a national scholastic honorary association for 2-year college students. There are more than 750 chapters and over 125 alumni chapters. Members of PTK uphold the organization’s commitment to excellence through its 4 hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. PTK membership is based on your academic progress. Student Nurses' Association (SNA)

The Student Nurses' Association is designed to benefit those enrolled in the nursing program at MCC. Some advantages of membership in the SNA include:

Association of Student Medical Assistants
The Association of Student Medical Assistants is designed for current medical assisting students as well as pre-medical assisting students. The Association’s goals are to educate the public to the expanding field of medical assisting, to continually improve the program, to explore better student learning methods, and to develop a community service project for each freshman group. Early Childhood Students' Association

The Early Childhood Student Association (ECSA) is organized for students enrolled
in Mayland Community College’s Early Childhood Education program and
also for alumni. Participation in the association provides numerous opportunities
for members to network with professionals in the field of Early Childhood and to
enjoy spending time with children.
Student Ambassador Program
MCC's Student Ambassador Program is a prestigious group of students nominated by the faculty and staff. Ambassadors serve the college in numerous functions throughout the year, such as MCC Foundation programs, trustee events, and recruiting activities.
S.O.A.R. Program

Academic counseling and assistance services are available to eligible individuals through the Support Options for Achievement and Retention (S.O.A.R.) Office at MCC.
Qualifications
You must either:
- Be a first-generation college student (neither of your parents graduated from a 4-year college)
- Have limited income by federal guidelines
- Have a physical or learning disability

The Counseling Center

The Counseling Center can provide assistance to all students and MCC alumni in the areas listed below. The office is located in Room 113 on the first floor of Gwaltney Hall on the Main Campus [map]. Specifically, services include:
CAREER COUNSELING
- Assistance in choosing major/career through self-awareness and career interest/aptitude testing
TRANSFER COUNSELING
- College information, cross-walks, articulation agreements
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORTIVE COUNSELING
- Assistance in developing success habits, such as time management or stress reduction, as well as supportive counseling and referral for personal problems.
JOB SEARCH ASSISTANCE
- Training in resume writing, interviewing skills, networking
PERSONAL COUNSELING
- Confidential counseling and referrals for personal problems
DISABILITY SERVICES
- Assistance in setting up accommodations for physical or learning disabilities
ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT SECURITY COMMISSION
An advisor from the Employment Security Commission is available part-time during the week to assist students in identifying job openings. The ESC office is located in the hallway before the Student Commons. The ESC Advisor can help you find part-time work while your are enrolled as a student, or full-time jobs related to your major when you get ready to graduate. Job openings are posted weekly on the ESC bulletin board and there is access to the ESC web page on the computer in the Student Commons.
Get REAL
(Resources, Employment, Advancement, Learning)
The Get REAL (Resources Employment Advancement Learning) System of Services offers resources for youth up through the age of 21 to help plan a career, get job experience, get advice on how to climb the career ladder and learn job training and searching skills. Programs are administered through the JobLink Career Centers in Avery, Mitchell and Yancey Counties. For more information about these services call 733-3901 in Avery County, 765-7758 in Mitchell County, or 678-9612 in Yancey County.

Learning Resources Center

The MCC Learning Resources Center (LRC) is located on the second floor of Gwaltney Hall on the Main Campus [map]. It is fully automated, using state-of-the-art computers, making information easily accessible. You can access the LRC on the Web here.
Hours of Operation
The LRC hours of operation are:
- 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday
- 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday
Hours of operation are typically reduced during holidays and semester breaks.
Resources
You will find print and non-print materials, electronic databases, audio-visual equipment and Internet access in the LRC. You will also find assistance with the RAVEN Distance Education classes in the LRC.
Bookstore

The MCC Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Samuel L. Phillips Center for Business and Technology on the Main Campus [map], provides textbook service to students. It also offers school supplies, clothing, computer software and other items for sale.
Hours of Operation
The Bookstore is open during the following hours:
- Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
- Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Bookstore hours of operation are extended during the week of registration and the first week of classes at the beginning of each semester. If you need something from the bookstore when it is not open, please go to the Business Office for assistance.
Returning Books
Books you purchased for classes during the current semester may be returned if you have the original register receipt, the book is in unused condition and the return is made within 5 days of purchase. Textbooks returned after this will be considered used and the Bookstore buy-back policy will be followed.
Selling Books Back to the Bookstore
The Bookstore holds a textbook buy-back the last 3 days of each semester. You can get up to 50% cash back for each book provided the instructor requests that the textbook be bought back, that the book is in good condition, and is not overstocked in the Bookstore. Textbooks not bought by the Bookstore may be purchased by a used textbook company if they are of any value.
Snackbar

MCC offers food service to you through the Snack Bar in the Student Commons on the Main Campus [map] and at vending areas in several locations on campus.

The MCC Snack Bar’s regular hours of operation during the year:
- MONDAY-THURSDAY 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
- FRIDAY 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The Phillips-Gwaltney Child Development Center

The Phillips-Gwaltney Child Development Center (PGCDC) provides quality child care to children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. It is located on the main campus. The phone number is (828) 765-1401.
Hours of Operation
PGCDC is open 5 days a week from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is closed during official MCC holidays. During periods of inclement weather, the Center’s operating hours may be curtailed or it may be closed. Local radio and TV stations will make announcements about schedule changes. Contact the Center for more information.
Cost
The cost is based on the market rate average for Avery County. See the Director of the Center for more details.
Enrollment
To enroll your child, please come by the Phillips-Gwaltney Child Development Center for an enrollment packet. No appointment is necessary.
Philosophy
PGCDC is more than just a childcare facility. It is based around the Whole Child concept of education, where children are encouraged to explore and experiment. Under proper guidance, they will develop skills that will be helpful to them when they begin school. Personalized instruction to children in a variety of educational activities is provided. A nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack are served daily.
Personal Care
The Center is designed to handle up to 117 children in its programs. It is a licensed 5-star rated childcare facility in North Carolina. This means that PGCDC scored very high in the areas of teacher education, compliance history and program. Additionally, PGCDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Rest assured that your child will be given personal attention during his or her experience at PGCDC.
A Laboratory School
While it is true that the PGCDC is used to train students from various institutions as well as MCC, the actual instruction and care for the children is provided by the staff of degreed teachers certified in first aid and CPR. Interns are closely supervised by the teachers and are taught through observations and discussions about quality child care. As an added safety measure, all employees and interns must complete a successful background check before working with the children.
Parental Involvement
Parental involvement and parent workshops are a vital part of your child’s experiences at PGCDC. Parents are children’s most important teachers, and they work with the Center’s teachers in providing the best instruction to the children.
Academic Support
Math Lab
MCC’s Math Lab, located in room P37 of the Vocational Building [map], is designed to provide one-on-one instruction and tutoring for MCC students.You can get more information on the Lab and how its services may help you by visiting with a MCC math instructor. You can also call the Main Campus at extension 229, (828) 765-7351 or 1-800-4-MAYLAND to get answers to questions or express concerns about the Lab.
Writing Lab
MCC’s Writing Lab is designed to provide one-on-one instruction and tutoring for all MCC students needing help in English and Literature. The Lab is held in several locations on the Main Campus: Rooms 242, 244 and 251 in Gwaltney Hall [map]. You can get more information on the Lab and how its services may help you by visiting with a MCC English instructor.
