CJ Edwards and Allen Get REAL

Charles J. Edwards (CJ) is taking his love of computers to the classroom as he pursues his degree in Information Systems Technology at Mayland Community College.

Edwards earned his GED through Mayland's Basic Skills Program.

In March, Edwards also enrolled in the goal based Get REAL youth program administered by the Mitchell County Joblink Center and Mayland Community College. This program helps train youth for the workforce.

Edwards was also provided with a $100 check through the Get REAL program for completing his goal and graduating with his GED.

"CJ worked hard and stayed focused," said Get REAL Program Career Coach Allen Cook. "He is a bright young man that saw the need for education in light of today’s challenging labor market. CJ has a bright future."

Through the WIA Program, Edwards will gain work experience through an internship with computers while he is attending Mayland.

From a very young age, Edwards held an interest in computers. Coupled with his advanced abilities and a love of music, allowed him to channel his creative energies and pursue his interests toward a career.

Edwards is the son of Charles and Faye Edwards of Spruce Pine.

The Get REAL Program is for youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who are interested in going back to school to earn their GED or advanced degree. Get REAL program participants work with a personal career coach dedicated to help with their future goals.
