What is JobsNOW and how can it benefit me?
North Carolina's JobsNOW initative is a collection of resources available to North Carolinians to help create new jobs and put people back to work.
Mayland Community College is partnering with other agencies to provide these services:
- Governor Beverly Perdue's Green Energy Plan is a package of programs designed to attract businesses, create jobs, and promote a strong, sustainable green economy in North Carolina. Mayland's Continuing Education division is offering a series of courses on Going Green.
- The "12 in 6" Worker Training Initiative is designed to benefit North Carolinians who have lost their jobs. North Carolina Community Colleges will be offering career paths that take 6 months or less to complete. These classes will be offered at all MCC campuses beginning in September. More details on these programs will be coming soon and will be posted on this website as they become available.
- North Caroiina State Government has developed a JobsNOW Web Portal that provides connections for individuals to find a job; start a career; start, grow, and finance a business; learn about government contracting; and get information on relocating to North Carolina.
- NCRecovery.gov has been established to provide North Carolinians with information on how the state is using the $8 billion in recovery funding to create jobs, stablilize the state budget, and develop and expand infrastructure in North Carolina.

Who Qualifies for JobsNOW?
Why not use this time to get more skills? More skills means more opportunities! You may have it paid for you if you are 18 or older and fall in one of these categories:
- You have been laid off from employment
- You were self-employed (including employment as a farmer, a rancher, or a (fisherman) but are unemployed now because of general economic conditions.
- You are a homemaker (female or male) who was, but is no longer supported by another family member.
- Unemployed and have been unable to find a job

Carpenters work in many areas within the construction industry. Their job consists of cutting, sizing, and constructing wood or other substances for building different types of constructions.
Learn to construct residential structures using standard building materials as well as using hand and power tools.
Course work includes footings and foundations, framing, interior and exterior trim, cabinets, blueprint reading, residential planning and estimating, and other related topics. Students will gain skills though hands-on participation.
Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) work under the supervision of a nurse and provide assistance to patients with daily tasks.
Instruction focuses on the basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents, or clients in a health care setting.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to make application for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
Electricians work on the installation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems found in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.
Training at MCC, most of which is hands-on, includes such topics as AC/DC theory, basic wiring practices, digital electronics, programmable logic controllers, industrial motor controls, the National Electric Code, and other subjects as local needs require.
Graduates should qualify for a variety of jobs in the electrical/electronics field as an on-the-job trainer or apprentice, assisting in the layout, installation, and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems.
The Human Resource Development (HRD) Program is designed to provide employment skills training to unemployed and underemployed adults. Tuition and fees for HRD classes are waived if the student is unemployed, has received notice of a layoff, or meets our income guidelines. Classes start throughout the semester for your convenience.
Employability Skills classes (24 hours in duration) cover job search skills, interview skills, resume development, and career planning.
Getting a North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate allows you to show prospective employers that you possess the basic skills they require. Even if you have a high school diploma (or GED) or a post-secondary degree, the CRC further verifies that you can handle the kinds of tasks – finding information, reading instructions and directions, even working with figures - that are common in today's workplace.
Individuals can earn three levels of Career Readiness Certificate (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) based on their test performance in applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information.
Career Readiness Certification (CRC) exams will be held monthly (and more often if needed) to access employability skills. There is a $30 fee for the CRC exam.
Preparation for the CRC is available through KeyTrain Labs, available at any of Mayland's Basic Skills labs located at the Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Campuses.

Cooling and heating devices help regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality in residential homes, commercial locations, and industrial facilities. Technicians carry out repairs, maintenance, and installations of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
Learn the skills necessary to become employed as a heating and air conditioning technician. This comprehensive course focuses on the operating principles of heating and cooling systems with emphasis on safety, theory and principles of refrigeration, types of heating/cooling systems, Ohm's law, load calculation, troubleshooting using the various types of test equipment, servicing, repairing and installing components/entire systems and employment of customer service techniques. A thorough understanding of the principles and fundamentals of solar heating and cooling will be demonstrated by the student.
Learn to work in the construction industry as a mason. Mayland's masonry courses provide the principles and fundamentals of masonry and experiences necessary to produce quality construction using safe, practical, and reliable work habits.
Course work includes basic mathematics, blueprint reading and methods used in laying out masonry jobs for residential, commercial, and industrial construction. Upon completion, students will be able to read blueprints, estimate structures, construct footings and walks, and lay masonry units.
Get prepared for positions in administrative support careers.
Courses are designed to develop proficiency in the use of integrated software, oral and written communication, analysis and coordination of office duties and systems, and other support topics. Emphasis is placed on non-technical as well as technical skills.
Upon completion, students can qualify for employment in a variety of positions in business, government, and industry. Job classifications range from entry-level to supervisor to middle management.
Phlebotomy training prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analyzing blood.
A phlebotomist's job includes maintenance of equipment used in obtaining blood specimen; the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients; the selection of venipuncture sites; the care of blood specimen; and the entry of the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests.
Learn the science, technology, and application essential for successful employment in the welding and metals industry at Mayland.
Instruction includes consumable and non-consumable electrode welding and cutting processes. Courses in math, blueprint reading, metallurgy, welding inspection, and destructive and non-destructive testing provides students with industry-standard skills developed through classroom training and practical application.
