The 2009 MCC Motorcycle Run

July 25, 2009

Mayland Community College hosted its second Motorcycle Poker Run with proceeds from the event benefiting the American Cancer Society as well as funding a scholarship for the fall semester at Mayland Community College. Over 60 bikers participated in the run, which circuited the region from Mitchell County, to Erwin, TN.

Riders began the day with a message from Mayland student and cancer survivor Teresa Honeycutt, this year’s Motorcycle Poker Run scholarship recipient. Riders also received a special helmet sticker in honor of fellow biker Tim Buchanan who lost his life while riding his motorcycle in June of this year.

“We could not have asked for a more beautiful or enjoyable day,” said Linda Herbst, coordinator of the event and Mayland’s Director of Continuing Education for Mitchell County.

Mayland Community College thanks the run’s leader, Keith McKinney, for planning the route and leading the group; volunteer support, the MCC Student Government Association, MCC student and mini Relay for Life organizer Chad Trivette, Melissa Graham of the American Cancer Society, Dean Edwards of Ingles in Spruce Pine, Ken Waldroup for his assistance in promoting the event, and Carolina BBQ in Newland for a delicious meal that wrapped up the day’s events.

Next year’s ride is slated for July 31, 2010.
