Creative Approaches to Substitute Education
This opportunity pairs substitute teacher training with art! Penland School of Crafts, Mayland Community College, and Mitchell County Schools are collaborating to create a new program that will train artists to work in the schools as substitute teachers. Training will focus on effective teaching skills, and the
opportunities teaching artists might uniquely bring to the classroom. Artists, who have flexibility in their schedules and often rely on a diverse range of income sources, are uniquely situated to act as substitute teachers. Schools are in need of qualified, engaging subs. Kids need more art! This program will connect these populations in a win/win/win scenario - artists get work when they want it, kids get more arts experiences, and the schools get an increased pool of great subs to call on, as well as expanded arts opportunities within their current budget structure.
