Camera and Photography Basics (21 Hours)

Want to learn more about digital photography for fun or a career? Instructor and professional photographer Beth Morris will teach students how to take the right kind of pictures, implement simple editing techniques, look for that ‘perfect shot’, and show off their digital work. Subjects covered will include aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, composition, and lighting.

New! Light is an important aspect when shooting photos. Both natural and unnatural lighting can create imaginative and beautiful images. Mac Computer Basics (15 hours)

Do you have your own MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? Are you a newcomer to the Mac world? If you answered yes to these two questions, then this class is for you. Learn basic skills from turning on your Mac and setting your own preferences to setting up an e-mail account and Apple ID. Participants will also learn keyboard and mouse tricks to make Mac use faster and smarter. Participants will also gain knowledge on Mac specific applications (i.e. iTunes, App Store, and Safari). Electrical Contractor License Renewal (8 Hours)

This course is designed to provide electri¬cal contractors with updated information on the latest changes in the National Electric Code, NC Electric Code, and local utility company requirements. When offered during fiscal year 2011-2012, this course meets the requirements of the North Caro¬lina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors for 8 contact hours of continu¬ing education credit. This course is not sponsored by the Board. Students should bring a current copy of the NC Electrical Code Book to class. A one hour lunch break will be given.

Auto Safety Inspection (8 Hours)

This course prepares auto technicians and service personnel as safety inspector for motor vehicles. It includes regulations and test inspection procedures and is taught to insure that the student understands the rules and regulations can inspect a vehicle properly and can successfully pass qualification exams for certification as a safety auto inspector at a licensed inspection station. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

Microdermabrasion Certification class (8 Hours)

In this theory and hands on class, you will learn everything you need to know about microdermabrasion facials. You will experience crystal tip treatments and learn about different treatment options, proper procedures and technique. Welding Skills for the Farm (24 Hours)

Learn the basic skills of stick and mig welding as well as the cutting process needed to repair broken equipment and tools on the farm. Understanding safe welding practices will be covered through lecture, demonstration, and practical applications.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) (210 Hours)

Students will have the opportunity to take the NC State EPA certification exam upon completion of the course.
The course objective is to provide each student with basic knowledge and skills to become a quality entry-level employee in the HVAC industry. Some industry related fields include but are not limited to: equipment and duct installers, duct cleaners, service technicians. The projected job outlook for this career field is expected to grow 21% between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. That is faster than the average for most other occupations. Currently, the national average hourly wage for HVAC technicians is $21.89 or $45,540 annually. Students in this program may be eligible for scholarship funds.

Electrical (194 Hours)

Qualified Electricians are always in demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an increase of nearly 20% in the number of job opportunities for Electricians by 2022. Electricians read blueprints, solve complex math problems and install electrical systems (all while adhering to numerous electrical and building codes). If you enjoy exercising your brain while working with your hands, then a job as an electrician may be right for you! Due to extensive job training, most electricians are qualified to choose among a variety of work environments including construction, electrical maintenance, commercial, residential and contracting. Currently, the national average hourly wage for electricians is $25.62 and the annual average is $53,294. Students in this program may be eligible for scholarship funds.

Micropropagation: Intro to Basic Laboratory Practices (12 Hours)

This class is to introduce you to basic lab practices in the micropropagation laboratory. It is offered to familiarized students with lab equipment and nomenclature, how to mix media, how to research protocol and perform under the hood practices. This class will help set the foundation needed by students who may be taking the curriculum course HOR 266 by giving them the advanced knowledge and confidence needed to hit the ground running in the laboratory. This course is the basic CPR and First Aid course designed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Upon successful completion of the course students receive an AHA First Aid, CPR, and AED card which is valid for two years. NC Concealed Carry Handgun (10 Hours)

This class provides the training and certificate needed to apply for a handgun permit at any Sheriff’s Department in NC. You must be at least 21 and a NC resident. To attend this class, you cannot have been convicted of any felonies or misdemeanor violent crimes. Bring 100 rounds of ammunition, a handgun, and holster to the firing range portion of the class ONLY. Bring a bag lunch. Space is limited so pre-register early. From 1:00-6:00 pm will be the firing range portion of the class, so do not bring firearms into the MCC campus. A fee will be required by the Sheriff’s Office in order to register for the permit.

Learn about the history and techniques used in the 6000 year old art of threading to remove unwanted hair. Students will also learn how to remove excess facial hair and create elegantly arched brows that will enhance your clients face shape. Conversational Spanish (24 Hours)

This course provides an introduction to communicating in Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on greetings, pronouns, common verbs, verb tense, adjectives, short sentence construction, expressing agreement and disagreement, understanding simple written signs, and the pronunciation of letters and vowels. Students will be encouraged to express their specific learning needs and their personal goals to be included in the weekly lesson plans. Defensive Driving (4 Hours)

This program trains motorists in the principles of defensive driving and is made available by the District Attorney through Mayland Community College, Mountain Professionals, Inc. and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina. You must register on or before 4:30PM the day of the class. Class MUST have a minimum of 5 students paid & registered to make. Classes will be canceled if class minimum isn’t met. When you come to register you must have the following information ready: driver’s license, social security number and citation (ticket).There is a non-refundable $65 class registration (cash or money order only) fee. Students 16-18 years of age must have a “Dual Enrollment Form” filled out prior to receiving a certificate.
