Going green is a popular topic these days, but what exactly does this mean?

This site provides educational insight to help those interested in "going green" reach their goals by offering educational resources that will discuss energy efficiency and the importance of sustainability, provide practical suggestions for recycling and making earth friendly consumer choices. Future course offerings may include home construction using green techniques, understanding our climate, organic gardening, sustainable crops, wind and solar energy, as well as building efficiency operator course offered to maintenance personnel in hospitals, school systems, and industries to reduce energy consumption.

This site will also offer links to a variety of web sites and resources related to "green" topics.

(NEW) Commercial Building Contractor's Licensure Exam Prep

This course will prepare individuals for the Commerical Builders licensing exam. Topics will include new green construction topics, blue print reading, law and regulation review applicable to commercial contractors, employment security laws and workers compensation. There will be extensive course study of the NC Building Code study questions, practice problems and exams to help students be prepared for the state exam. Students should bring a current copy of the North Carolina Building Code Book to class. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. ****Add WIA scholarship availability information here.

(NEW) Solar & Radiant Heat Sources

This three day course will help individuals learn about radiant heat systems and help decide which system is best for their house. The basics of solar thermal systems will be discussed as well as any incentives from the State and/or Federal government. Building codes pertaining to installations will be covered and a short lecture on installing a radiant floor heat system. This will also cover solar hot water systems. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

(NEW) Designing & Building a Sustainable Green Home

This is mainly a lecture course to familiarize individuals with the many options involved with building a Green Home. Topics discussed will range from site work all the way through designing a well-built house. There is a possibility of a walk through of a green home totally off the grid! Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

Growing Green - Get Going! (NEW)

 

Confused about how to start a planting bed or how to improve what you've been doing? Topics covered in
this class stem from a sustainable "small" organic perspective. They include: soil test and analysis and how to remedy problems including sourcing and understanding the use of amendments; soil test and analysis and how to remedy problems; soil prep/ tillage; crop rotations: persistent weed eradication; cover crop establishment / incorporation as a low till mulch; compost production; deer and other crop preda- tor exclusion/ repelling; propagation of seedlings; irrigation; layout; planting; time frames and schedules and sustain- able pest and disease strategies and resources. Carolina Farm stewardship Association's "2008 Farmer of the Year", Patryk brings 30 years of organic growing experience to the classroom. His writings on organic growing appear in both regional and national publications and he is a panelist on WCQs' long running garden call-in
show.

Growing the Backside of the Calendar

This series of classes will provide information, resources, and inspiration to harvest abundant crops of your favorite (and likely some new to you) hardy and half hardy organic vegetables from fall through the dead of winter. Designed as a series of sessions that step by step cover materials, tasks and skills required to reach this goal, each session will be scheduled to occur just in time for the students to leave the class and get right to pertinent endeavors in their own yards. Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's "2008 Farmer of the Year", Patryk brings 30 years of organic growing experience to the classroom. His writings on organic growing appear in both regional and national publications and he is a panelist on WCQS' long running garden call-in show. Patryk is passionate about introducing growers to the ease and bounty of winter production.
