Continuing Education Classess Offered through MCC's HRD Program

The Human Resources Development (HRD) Program is designed to provide employment skills training to unemployed and underemployed adults. HRD classes are designed to help students by addressing six core components: 1) assessment of an individual’s assets and limitations, 2) development of a positive self-concept, 3) development of employment skills, 4) development of communications skills, 5) development of problem-solving skills, and 6) develop awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace. *Tuition and fees for HRD classes are waived if the student is unemployed, has received notice of a layoff, or meets certain income guidelines. We have classes starting throughout the semester for your convenience.

RESUME WRITING & CAREER DEVELOPMENT
A properly written resume can be the key to landing the perfect job. However most of us do not know how to write a resume. In addition, the Employment Security Commission’s Job Bank is now available through a computer, which can be difficult for some people to use. But don’t worry. Help is here. HRD staff can now assist you at the Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey county JobLinks each week. We can help you to find jobs in the ESC database or write that perfect resume. We also offer career counseling for those who need some direction to their job search.

Resume Writing Lab
A well-written resume is crucial to your job search. We will show you how to create the perfect resume for your job search needs using WinWay Resume Writer software. We will also show you how to upload your resume to job search sites on the Internet.

LIFE SKILLS
This personal makeover class is for women who want to increase their self-esteem and expand their personal boundaries. Topics covered include communication skills, self-esteem development, developing healthy relationships, stress management, personal budgeting skills, and a personal wardrobe and makeup color analysis.

JOB SEARCH SKILLS
This six-hour class assists students to identify and pursue the best job for their needs. Topics include job search strategies, creating resumes and cover letters, preparing to ace the interview, and meeting employer expectations.

Pre-Homeowner Education Course
Take the mystery out of buying a home in this eight-session seminar. Topics include planning for home ownership, credit analysis and budgeting, selecting a home and neighborhood, and understanding sales contracts. We will also include financing your home purchase, applying for a mortgage, closing the transaction, and survival tips for homeowners.

How To Survive A Layoff
Being laid off from your job can be a very traumatic experience. It can affecct your emotional well-being, your finances, and your career. We will show you ways to minimize the trauma and to recover quickly. We will also show you job search tips to speed up the process, discuss interview techniques, and cover resume development and use in a job search.
