Distance Education:
Orientations &
Evaluations

Orientations and Evaluations are both required for RAVEN (Regional Audio/Video Education Network), courses.

Mandatory Orientations

The mandatory orientations take place the first few days of each semester. The schedule for orientations is posted on this site.

The schedule for orientation sessions is available here.

During orientations, students are encouraged to:

  1. Schedule your time wisely - Stay current in your assignments. Do not let your self get behind!

  2. Keep in touch with your Instructor - Let him/her know if you are having any trouble with the course.

  3. Ask for help when you need it.

The Importance of Distance Education Evaluations

Mayland Community College is committed to constantly and consistently improving courses and services for our students. In order to make those improvements we must know what is working well and what needs attention. A mandatory part of all Distance Education courses is the completion of an evaluation of the course and of related services. This is handled by John Gossett, Mayland's Director of Institutional Advancement and Planning. The following memo is from Mr. Gossett to you:

Subject: Course Evaluations

Welcome to Mayland Community College's Distance Education program. We are happy to serve you and hope your course is an enjoyable, yet challenging one.

The Institutional Research & Planning Department at Mayland is charged with determining what students think of the courses they take. One way we gather those data is by asking you to spend a few minutes answering questions that we believe give us a better idea of how to make the courses better. I can assure you that all responses are confidential! I only track who has responded to the questionnaireso I can let the instructors know, in case they assign points for this mandatory part of the class.

Your instructor will direct you to either a web-based survey or a hard copy version in the LRC. Please let us know what we did correctly and what we can improve on. We can only get better with your input and advice.

We really do listen to your comments and suggestions. The Distance Education Orientation Handout came about in response to course evaluations. You will be receiving more information about how to complete the evaluation near the end of the course.
