WHO MAY BORROW - All MCC students, faculty, staff as well as residents of the MCC service area may check out materials from the LRC with a valid borrower's card issued at the circulation desk, or an MCC photo ID card.
The LRC's Library Card Request Form (Adobe Acrobat file) can be downloaded here (requires the free Adobe Reader software which can be downloaded here).
The completed form faxed to the LRC at 1-828-765-2327 or scanned and attached to an email sent to lrc@mayland.edu or mailed to:

LOAN PERIOD - Most books circulate for a period of three weeks. They may be renewed for an additional three weeks if no hold has been placed.
OVERDUE MATERIAL - Each borrower must assume responsibility for returning library materials on time.
DAMAGED® OR MUTILATED ITEMS - So, your dog thought the brand new book on electronic circuits was a steak bone. Unfortunately, you are still responsible for the remains! Charges will be assessed by LRC personnel, and will vary from one situation to another. Tell your sob story to our circulation desk staff, and be sure to bring plenty of tissues!
LOST ITEMS - The cost of any lost item is the current price plus a $5 processing fee. The cost of an out-of-print item is $25 plus the $5 processing fee.
NON-PRINT MATERIAL - Non-Print material circulates for one week. These are listed in the Audio Visual Handbook at the circulation desk.
AUDIO VISUAL EQUIPMENT - A/V equipment is available for overnight use to students and non-profit organizations. There are some pieces of equipment which do not circulate off-campus. Anyone borrowing equipment will be responsible for its proper use and care. See the library desk attendant to submit these requests.
AUDIO VISUAL MATERIAL - A/V material is available for use by students and non-profit organizations. It may be borrowed for one week. If you do not find what you are looking for by using the public access terminal, please ask at the desk. We may have an alternate way of finding it for you!
NEWSPAPERS - Newspapers from the local area, several major cities across North Carolina and out-of-state publications are received in the LRC. Current issues are available for use in the LRC.
MAGAZINES - Magazines do not circulate. The newest issue may be found on display in the LRC. Back issues are located either under the current issue or in the rear of the LRC. Just ask for help. You may index these using either The Readerâs Guide to Periodical Literature or the NewsBank Index to Periodicals.
HOLDS/RECALLS - If an item that you need has been checked out, you may place a hold on it. This can be done on the public access terminal. (See the section on Automated Circulation System.) You will be notified when it is returned. If the item is overdue, an LRC staff member will attempt to recall it for you.
SEARCHES - If you cannot locate an item that you need, and it is not checked out, you may request that a search be made for it. We will notify you of the results.
RESERVE SHELF - Materials are placed on reserve at the request of faculty and staff. These materials are located behind the circulation desk, and students will need to ask for them. You will need to present your borrowerâs card for use of these materials, just as you will to borrow any others. Check-out periods may vary from use in the LRC to several days, depending on the instructorâs request.
RETURNING MATERIALS - There are book drops at the circulation desk and also in front of the administration/classroom building. You may return materials checked out from the MCC LRC to either of these locations. If you are returning interlibrary loan materials or non-print material, please hand these directly to the person on duty at the circulation desk.
SECURITY CONTROL - Items from the circulating collection may be brought directly to the circulation desk for check out. If materials are not checked out properly, an alarm will sound as the patron exits, and the exit gate will lock. If this occurs, please return to the circulation desk for clearance.
Appalachian Room
The Appalachian Room, located to the rear of the circulation desk, contains a specialized collection of books, pamphlets, magazines and microfilm pertaining specifically to our own area and to genealogy in general. Materials to help both the beginning and the more advanced researcher are available. There are three separate collections in the Appalachian Room. These are the North Carolina collection and the Appalachian collection, each of which contain items that do circulate outside the LRC. North Carolina links can be found here. The third is the genealogy collection, which contains no items that circulate. Genealogy links can be found here.
The LRC has partnered with The North Carolina Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni whose Home Page can be accessed here.
Due to the value of the materials housed here, this area is kept locked at all times, but the circulation desk attendant will be happy to give you access to the room during LRC hours. Many times materials to supplement research done in the Appalachian Room are available on interlibrary loan, although these mainly consist of microfilm or photocopy.
Extras
INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION - If you need help with the use of any reference tool or other material in the library, please ask the circulation desk attendant for help. Whoever is on duty can help you to conquer the particular item causing you stress! Do not sit and struggle. The desk personnel are trained to help you - use their services.
TERM PAPER COUNSELING - So, your instructor assigned a term paper? And it is due a week from yesterday? Well, do not panic. Ask your friendly neighborhood librarian for assistance. We can help. One thing to keep in mind is if you are planning on using interlibrary loan, you will need to begin further ahead!
FOR ASSISTANCE IN SUBJECT RESEARCH - The library staff will be happy to help you with your research - but we will not be happy to do your work for you! So plan to let us jump-start you and get out of your way! Just ask for help. FOOD - Food for thought in the LRC is fine - but snacks and drinks are not. If you have a sudden urge for a Pepsi and a Snickers bar, please devour these in the Commons!
TOBACCO - Use of all tobacco products in the LRC is prohibited.
LOST AND FOUND - Should you be so forgetful as to leave behind your new $65.00 econ text or your favorite jacket, our ever watchful staff may find it and stash it away for you in that Pandora's box in Student Development. Ask there to claim your treasured belongings.
LEASE BOOKS - You will find the latest best sellers and novels on top of the shelf that houses young adult books. They are easy to identify because of the red band that is around the bottom of each book. These may be borrowed for three weeks. If there are new books that you would like to read that we do not have, feel free to ask if we can get it on the lease program.
LAMINATOR - A laminator is available for your convenience. Ask an LRC staff member for assistance.
TAPE DUPLICATION - We will be glad to duplicate an audio or video cassette tape for you if you bring your own blank tape. Please keep in mind that all copyright regulations will be enforced!
STUDY CARRELS - Carrels are located around the LRC for your convenience. These generally make studying a bit more quiet. Feel free to use them at any time.
TELEPHONES - No public telephones are located inside the LRC. There are two pay phones on the lower floor as you enter the Commons.
REST ROOMS - Rest rooms are located near the elevator on the second floor, near the center of the building on the first floor and also in the Commons.
REFERENCE - Basically, reference consists of three things: a person in need of information, a librarian who is an expert at putting together information and those seeking it and the proper reference tool. In the case of Mayland's LRC, this could be a book, a CD-ROM product or an online link. Online Reference links can be accessed here. For help with any of these, please ASK FOR HELP! Do not puzzle for hours. Do not be embarrassed to ask for help. That is why we are here!
Workstations
You will find fifteen workstations in the LRC. All computers have Microsoft Office and Internet Access. You may print from any computer, but there is a charge of five cents per page.
Automated Circulation System
The Learning Resources Center is automated using the Community Colleges Libraries in North Carolina or CCLINC. This means that when you use our online public access catalog, you will have the benefit of searching through the holdings of 44 community colleges across North Carolina. This gives you fingertip access to the third largest library in the state! If you find a title that you need, and it is not owned by Mayland, you may place a hold on it, and it will be sent to the LRC from that location. You will need a valid borrowerâs card.
CCLINC contains many kinds of materials, from books and periodicals to video tapes and CD-ROM products. The type of material will be identified for you. Please be aware that some materials will not circulate!
Interlibrary Loan
There is one other way to have access to materials not owned by Mayland. It happens to everyone - you have found the title of the authoritative book on your research topic. Eager and breathless, you key your information into the CCLINC. And it lets you know in no uncertain terms that it has never heard of the title! Do not despair!! Do not jump in front of a truck! Do not drop the class!! Try interlibrary loan (also known as ILL). The purpose of ILL is to make materials not found on the CCLINC available for research, in the belief that the furtherance of knowledge is in the interest of all. Interlibrary loan can supplement your resources by making material from other libraries accessible to you upon request.
Plan ahead for this service. Many periodical requests can be filled by fax on the day that they are requested. But do not count on this. The particular periodical which you need may not even be owned by either of our consortia. Also, books can take from 1 to 6 weeks or longer to arrive. It will depend on whether or not the particular item you have in mind is checked out or is on reserve or has otherwise been captured and is unavailable to help you with your research.
All interlibrary loans, including CCLINC items, must be brought back on time! This is a case of Mayland borrowing, and you jeopardize our ability to borrow when you are careless. Renewals are at the discretion of the lending institution, and no overdue material will be considered for renewal. Some institutions charge for this service. We do not. However, we must pass charges along to the patron. So be prepared to tell us how much you are willing to spend! Come to the circulation desk for ILL requests, and the desk attendant will assist you in filling out the form. We will try to contact you when your materials arrive.
The LRC's Interlibrary Loan Form (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format) can be downloaded here (requires the free Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded here).
