Admissions Information
Cost
The cost of the books and uniforms are approximately $500.00 and can be purchased through the Mayland Community College Bookstore, which is located on the main campus of Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine, NC.
Dress
Black uniform shirt, khaki dress pants, black hat, black belt and black shoes are required for the classroom. It is required that the cadets of the police academy present the neat, clean appearance comparable to that of a uniformed road patrol officer. There is also a physical fitness uniform that is mandated for physical fitness training sessions.
Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the BLET Program must:
- Have completed and submitted to the Admissions Office a college application for admission.
- Have graduated from high school or have an Adult High School Diploma or have passed the GED with an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum requirements set by the State of North Carolina. Official high school transcript or copy of a HS Diploma/GED Certificate must be on file in the Admissions Office. High School Diploma/GED must have been received by an approved agency pursuant to NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission mandate.
- Meet the minimum standards for employment as established by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission include:
- be a citizen of the United States.
- be at least 20 years of age (must be 20 years of age as of the first day of class or have prior written authorization from the Director of the Criminal Justice Standards Division if less than 20 years old).
- be of good moral character;
- be examined and certified by a licensed physician or surgeon to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the functions of a law enforcement officer.
- Must meet all certification requirements of the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission pertaining to a NC law enforcement officer.
- Must meet the entry requirements of a reading comprehension test to be given to all applicants.
- Have not ever committed or been convicted of any of the following:
- a felony;
- a crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more that two years;
- a crime or unlawful act for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more that six months but less than two years and the crime or unlawful act occurred within five years of application for certification: (This prohibition applies to all NC offenses prior to October 1, 1994 and all state or federal offenses regardless of the date.)
- four or more crimes or unlawful acts described in #3 above regardless of the date of occurrence; or
- four or more crimes or unlawful acts for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for less than six months.
- A crime or unlawful act listed in the NC Class B Midemeanor Manual. (This prohibition applies to all NC offenses after October 1, 1994.)
Note: An applicant may be admitted if the last conviction or commission date in #5 above occurred more than two years prior to the date of application for certification.
- Be sponsored for Basic Law Enforcement Training by a Law Enforcement Agency.
NOTE: Sponsorship must be retained throughout the BLET program for the student to remain enrolled.
- Be interviewed by the Director of the BLET Program or the Chairperson.
- Have signed and submitted the Statement of Understanding Concerning Acceptance for Basic Law Enforcement Training.
- Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must meet all minimum standards for employment and certification.
Curriculum Description
Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.
This program utilizes State Commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.
Successful graduates receive a curriculum certificate and are qualified to take certification examinations mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Successful completion of CJC 100 - Basic Law Enforcement Training may substitute for CJC 120 - Interview/Interrogations, CJC 131 - Criminal Law, CJC 132 - Court Procedures & Evidence, CJC 221 - Investigative Principles, CJC 225 - Crisis Intervention or CJC 231 - Constitutional Law.
