Curriculum Description
The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the
knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of
clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings.
Courses will include content related to the nurse’s role as provider of nursing
care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of nursing, and as a
member of the interdisciplinary team.
Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council
Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a
Registered Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long-term care
facilities, clinics, physician’s offices, industry, and community agencies.
**Students who are CNA Is and successfully complete NUR 115 are eligible to apply, if they so desire, to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination which is required for Nurse Aide I certification through the Division of Facilities.
**Students, who are NurseAide I’s and successfully complete NUR 135, are
eligible to apply to be certified as a Nurse Aide II through the North Carolina
Board of Nursing, if they so desire.

Associate Degree Nursing Educational Outcomes
The Nursing faculty provides and implements a nursing curriculum that is based on the nursing process and is regulated by law, ethics, and standards of practice. Upon licensure, graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Mayland Community College will be able to do:
- Utilize human needs and evidence-based practice as a framework for prioritizing nursing care for individuals across the life span.
- As a provider of care, utilize the nursing process to administer patient-centered, holistic nursing care to individuals and groups with common complex alterations in health.
- Communicate effectively with individuals,groups, significant others, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams through the use of written expression, verbal and non-verbal expression, and informatics.
- As a manager of care, and member of the interdisciplinary team, apply quality improvement measures in directing nursing care for individuals and groups with common complex alterations in health.
- As a member within the discipline, through individual and collaborative participation, uphold legal, ethical, and professional standards of nursing practice.
Program Outcomes
- Educates beginning practitioners to deliver patient-centered nursing care to all/any persons with common to complex health alterations in a variety of structured healthcare settings.
- Graduates students who pass the NCLEX at or above the national pass rate for first-time writers.
- Graduates students of whom 80% become employed in nursing within six months.
- Graduates students of whom 80% indicate that they are satisfied overall with the quality of the nursing education they received.
- Graduates students of whom 95% of employers indicate that they would hire another graduate in the future if the need arises.
- Maintains full approval of the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Meets standards of Mayland Community College, the North Carolina Community College System, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
