The General Occupational Technology curriculum is designed to allow students to upgrade their skills in preparation to enter an Associate Degree program at Mayland Community College.
Curriculum Description:
This curriculum provides individuals with an opportunity to upgrade their skills and to earn an associate degree by taking courses suited for their occupational interests and/or needs.
The curriculum content will be individualized for students according to their occupational interests and needs. A program of study for each student will be selected from any non-developmental level courses (100-189 or 200-289) offered by the college.
Graduates will become more effective workers, be better qualified for advancements within their fields of employment or become better-qualified for a wide range of entry level employment opportunities.
General Education
Degree programs must contain a minimum of 15 semester hours including at least one course from each of the following areas: humanities/fine arts, social/behavioral sciences, and natural sciences/ mathematics. Degree programs must contain a minimum of six (6) semester hours of communications. Diploma programs must contain a minimum of six (6) semester hours of general education; three (3) semester hours must be in communications. General education is optional in certificate programs.
Core Courses
Because of the unique nature of the General Occupational Technology curriculum program and to allow maximum flexibility there are no requirements for core courses.
Other Program Courses
Associate in Applied Science (AAS), diploma, and certificate programs must include courses which offer specific job knowledge and skills. Work experience, including cooperative education, practicums, and internships, may be included in a degree or diploma program up to a maximum of eight (8) semester hours and in a certificate program up to a maximum of two (2) semester hours.
A college may require other subjects or courses to complete graduation requirements. These requirements may include electives, orientation, study skills courses, or other graduation requirements. Total number of semester hours credit must include a minimum of sixty-four (64) hours and a maximum of sevent-six (76).
The following courses are primarily intended for students seeking admittance to the Associate Degree Nursing Program. However, the curriculum content can be individualized for students seeking to upgrade their skills.
