Our mission
The Mission of the Basic Skills Program is to provide a variety of educational opportunities in reading, writing, and mathematics to program participants.
Student Learning Outcomes
It is the goal of the Basic Skills Program that our students will achieve one or more of the following outcomes:
- Improve skills in reading, writing, and/or mathematics
- Earn a GED certificate
- Prepare to enter higher education or training at Mayland or other educational institution
- Acquire a higher level of skills in speaking, reading, and writing the English language
- Attain a higher level of life skills, employment skills, or independent living skills.

Basic Skills Locations
The Basic Skills Program main offices are located on the ground floor of Gwalney Hall [floorplan] of the Mayland Main Campus in Spruce Pine [campus map].
We also offer classes at locations across our service area:
- Avery County - Newland [Avery Campus]
- Mitchell County - Bakersville [Historic Mitchell County Courthouse]; Spruce Pine [MCC Main Campus]
- Yancey County - Burnsville [Yancey Campus]
