Mission Statement

The Mission of the Basic Skills Program is to provide a variety of educational opportunities in reading, writing, and mathematics to program participants.

Student Learning Outcomes

It is the goal of the Basic Skills Program that our students will achieve one or more of the following outcomes:

  • Improve skills in reading, writing, and/or mathematics
  • Earn a GED certificate
  • Prepare to enter higher education or training at Mayland or other educational institution
  • Acquire a higher level of skills in speaking, reading, and writing the English language
  • Attain a higher level of life skills, employment skills, or independent living skills.

Basic Skills Location

The Basic Skills Program main office is located on the ground floor of Gwaltney Hall, Mayland’s main building in Spruce Pine (map).

We also offer classes at locations across our service area:
