Adult Education/GED® at Mayland Community College

Adult Education/GED® is MORE than high school equivalency! We also provide free services in Life Skills, college preparation, career readiness, Adult Basic Education, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Students will have opportunities to improve reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills.

Jason Howell

Jason Howell currently works for the Yancey County Department of Social Services. According to Jason, not having career options can lead to lack of monetary stability that can increase the chances of family problems. He suggests that to improve yourself, your family, and your community, one should return to school. Earn your GED® or enroll in classes.  Getting started with the educational process is always a step in the right direction.

David Buchanan, age 35, works as an influential chemist for the Unimin Corporation in Spruce Pine, NC.  His inspiring story tells how he got his start at Mayland’s Learning Lab, and how reaching out for help really paid off.

Jessica DownieJessica Downie came to Mayland to start on her career path to becoming a nurse. First, she began in Mayland's Adult Education Department at the college's Avery Learning Center where she earned her GED®. Currently, she is enrolled in curriculum classes that will help her become a nursing student at Mayland.

Mayland Learning Lab’s TABE services benefit BLET Grad

Mayland’s BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) and EMT (Emergency Management Training) students are all required to complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) which is administered FREE of charge in Mayland’s Learning Lab during regular class hours, Monday through Friday.  Before students can enroll in either of these two programs, they must achieve passing scores on the TABE...
