Community College

The Mayland Community College Basic Skills Program, in conjunction with Avery County Public Schools, offers an Even Start Family Literacy Program at Newland Elementary School.

In this program, parents and children participate in school together. Parents work to improve their parenting skills and develop employability skills while their children attend an early childhood classroom where an age-appropriate curriculum is provided to prepare children for success in school and life. A special time is also set aside each day for interactive literacy activities between the parents and children.

This class is available to adult parents who have children under 8 years of age and have educational goals which might include:

  • Improving parenting skills

  • Increasing employability skills

  • Building life skills

  • Earning a GED
