
ESL (English as a 2nd Language)
Free classes for non-native English speakers are offered at community locations across Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. Students may enroll to improve written and spoken English, develop life skills, and study for the United States Citizenship Test.

English as a Second Language (ESL) atMayland Community College
The Mayland Community College Basic Skills Program offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to local residents who are interested in improving their English speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Classes focus on everyday life skills that enable the student to be a functioning member of society by learning the English language. These classes are available to adults age 18 and above or for younger students with notarized documentation from parents and public school officials.
Students who enroll in the ESL program will have an opportunity to:
- Practice basic English conversational skills
- Improve personal survival skills
- Become a more involved member of the community
