The Basic Skills Program serves Avery County with GED, College Preparation, Family Literacy, ESL, and Compensatory Education classes at various locations, including the Mayland Avery Campus on Cranberry Street in Newland [map].

The current Avery County class schedule is as follows:

GED Studies

An “open” class, allowing each student to set his or her own attendance schedule at any time during operation hours (for example, attending for an hour or two after work as the student’s schedule allows).

College Preparation

Family Literacy

For parents who have children under eight years of age and have educational goals which might include improving parenting skills, building life skills, or earning a GED.
