The Associate in Fine Arts Program at Mayland Community College is designed to allow you to complete the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree at Mayland and then move on to complete your fine arts degree at a 4-year college or university.
What makes Mayland's Associate in Fine Arts program unique is that it is offered in collaboration with the world-famous Penland School of Crafts and allows students the flexibility to study with Penland instructors while taking general education courses at Mayland.
Curriculum Description:
The Associate in Fine Arts Program is designed for the students who plan to transfer to a four year institution to continue their formal education for a Baccalaureate Degree. The AFA program of study includes a general education core of 28 semester hours credit distributed as follows:
- English Composition (6)
- Humanities/Fine Arts (6)
- Social/Behavioral Sciences (9)
- Natural Sciences/Mathematics (7)
The remaining hours in the Associate in Fine Arts program consists of courses related to the arts, music, theatre, drama, etc.
Students who are planning to transfer to a private college or out-of-state institution should consult with that institution for academic course selection guidance.
The students' faculty advisors should be consulted for a listing of the courses that will satisfy the degree requirements for transfer purposes.
Program of Study
Each candidate for the Associate in Fine Arts degree will have an individualized semester-by-semestter plan that incorporates the desired and relevant courses the student wishes to take at Penland School, along with MCC courses appropriate for transfer to the 4-year institution of his or her selection.
